Reception Class

Dear everyone,

Happy New Year! Welcome back to a very short but action-packed term. We have only five weeks before we break up for half term and the weather does often get in the way of what we hope to achieve! With this in mind, our theme this half term is entitled ‘Winter, water and weather’ so we shall be ready for anything the environment wishes to throw at us!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development-Our topic this term is ‘Going for Goals’. We are turning over a new leaf for the New Year, making resolutions and developing stamina and persistence.

Communication, language and literacy-We are continuing to learn the initial sounds which make up our words and to begin to ‘sound out’ three letter words eg. ‘sun’ ‘pot’ ‘big’. Our focus this half term will be on letter formation so we shall be practising forming letters correctly. The children continue to be enthusiastic readers so please continue to change their reading books as often as you wish BUT please put those you have finished with back in the rack by the door for others to choose. Mrs Booker will be changing library books on Friday mornings so can you please make sure that the children bring their library books back each Friday. If anyone could spare an hour to help her she would be very grateful!

Numeracy- We are all pretty good at knowing how to write and count to ten and so this term we are counting up to 100, adding and taking away small groups of numbers, counting in sets and groups and looking at 2d and 3d shapes in models and patterns.

Understanding of the World- This term’s focus is about Winter. We are learning about Wintry weather and how it affects our lives, especially finding out about keeping warm in Winter. We shall look at the colder parts of the world and the people and animals who live there. Chinese New Year also falls in this half term so we will look more closely at China and try some Chinese food.

Creative Development- We will continue to enjoy music and movement with Mrs Brook on a Friday morning. Art will focus on Winter paintings, using glitter and paint to create icy, frosty patterns. We will make some ice sculptures using natural materials

Physical Development- Our PE topic will find us investigating different ways of curling and stretching in the Village Hall on Thursday afternoons. Pick up will be there at 3.20pm. We shall be finding as many different ways as we can of keeping warm in Winter and learning some new games.

We still have lots of opportunities to come and help Tuesday and Friday mornings and also on any afternoon with reading, cooking, playing games and creating in the classroom so if you have an hour or two to spare, please come and have a chat!

Here’s to a very busy half term!

Best wishes,

Mrs Toynbee, Mrs Booker and Mrs Colquhoun
